Supporting BOLD

Thanks to the generosity of donations from the community and alumni, BOLD is able to establish many outstanding projects and build on its international reputation, establishing it as one of Canada's preeminent forensic laboratories.

Making a gift will allow UBC to continue its tradition of excellence, and to continue to develop innovative projects that build upon the university's Trek 2000 vision.

Highlights

• The research developed at BOLD has resulted in several significant discoveries of new techniques which are now in widespread use in criminal evidence collection and analysis. These methods have already been responsible for the resolution of several previously unsolved crimes and will certainly be involved in many more cases in the future.
• The researchers at BOLD are continuing to develop new technologies and techniques which will become the great forensic breakthroughs of the future.
• BOLD is the only facility in Canada or the United States that provides graduate training in forensic odontology, producing future forensic research scientists. Dr. Sweet has had a major impact on the forensic community through his many training sessions. Bite marks are now referred to as ‘Sweet Spots’ after his extensive work in helping experts to understand them as ‘biological’ evidence.
• Dr. Sweet and his associates at BOLD have provided key analysis for the solution of many high profile crimes and events — including the historic ‘Babes in the Woods’ case and the ‘Abby Killer’ case. BOLD’s involvement in these cases has attracted significant media attention. Most recently, BOLD has been placed in a leadership role in helping Canadian officials to identify deceased Canadians from the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia in December 2004.
